About

This website is a place for me to share all the subclass ideas that pop into my head. I've been playing D&D for close to a decade now, and always had a lot of fun building characters. For me that usually starts with a mechanical hook, seeing a cool subclass feature and building a character and story around that. I hope that the subclasses I publish here help others do the same!

All content I create is released for free. Patreon subscribers get to see the subclasses a week before they are published on the website, and get a chance to vote for upcoming subclass themes.

Artificer subclasses are always published to Patreon and the website at the same time, as they are not covered by the SRD, but rather by Wizard's Fan Content Policy, which does not permit monetizing (early) access.

Design Philosophy

I design these subclasses for players who already know the game reasonably well. Wizards of the Coast already does a good job making more beginner-friendly subclasses, so I'm aiming for slightly more complex, interesting subclasses to build around that remain easy to understand for both players and DMs.

Hopefully these subclasses feel balanced and fun at every table. I try to avoid features that are overdone a lot in official content, like handing out temporary Hit Points or granting bonus action teleports, or features that bog down combat by forcing constant saving throws (sighs in Topple).

If you want to understand why something was designed the way it was, many features will have a "Design Note" section below them explaining the intent behind the feature, and occasionally some balancing levers for DMs to guide them in how to tweak the subclass for their table.

Play Testing

Subclasses presented on this site go through a limited amount of playtesting. Features get benchmarked against officially published content as best as possible, and with the limited amount of time available between writing the subclasses I try and do a session with all of them in tier 2 and tier 3 of play.

Accessibility

I believe D&D should be accessible to anyone, and I think the same should be true of any content published here. I do my best to keep the site accessible and WCAG-compliant.

If you run into an accessibility issue, please let me know at help@boonsmith.com so I can fix it.

Art

All of the art on this website is made by real people, who get paid what they ask for. I do not use AI-generated art.

If you are an artist and have a great idea for one of the subclasses, you can send a request through the Google Form linked on any subclass page that does not yet have art. Artists are always credited on the page.

Use of AI

While I do not use AI for art, I do occasionally use LLMs to help with site development, ideation, and adjusting the copy of published articles.
